Blood Sugar

Wake up.
There’s something wrong with my system.
Jacked up hormones,
insulin.
Eat it now
and don’t throw up.

I’m only twenty-four.

Get up.
You have a job to do,
muscle bands to twist
and no amount of
care
will save you
from thin, sugarless blood.
Eat, eat more,
but not too much.
Never too much.

I’m only twenty-four.

Shake it off.
If you lay down you’ll stay down,
on that dirty floor,
where there are fleas
and children
anxious
for your return
to life.
Swallow the warm,
soggy flesh of earth,
eat, eat, eat,
because your body
can’t keep up.

I’m only twenty-four.
