Because I’m White

She said I wouldn’t understand
because I was white.
I was privileged
despite growing up
on Ramen and hand-me-downs
because I had
pale skin.
She told me ‘the white Christians
will murder us,’
to me, only me,
the white Christian.
And then said I
was the only one
freaking out.
She said she would scream
until change happened,
scream until the white privileged
were overthrown
and expected me not
to protest.
She said this all
with back straight and eyes proud.

…Anything I said back
was ignored.
I didn’t understand.
I was white.

Because I thought it was just

a skin color.
